Regalia FAQ

Can I customize my mortarboard?

Yes! We encourage graduates to decorate and customize their mortarboard. Please be mindful to have appropriate decorations since this is a family event.

Can I have someone else pick up my cap and gown in Boston?

Yes, someone else can pick up your cap and gown. We ask that you forward your cap and gown confirmation email to them as they will need your order number and last name for pick up.

Can I receive my regalia earlier or mailed?

Yes, all students have the option to mail their cap and gown directly to their residential address with the exception of Canadian campuses. Toronto and Vancouver regalia is pick up only.

Please check your campus information for more details about how to place your regalia order and deadlines.

Cap and gown ordering process is be made available by the end of January.

Can I receive my regalia if I am not attending the ceremony?

Yes, all students have the option to mail their cap and gown directly to their residential address. It is not required to attend a ceremony to order a cap and gown.

What if I do not receive my cap and gown in time for Commencement?

Regalia is required to wear at the Commencement ceremony and if you arrive without it, we cannot guarantee you will be provided a proper cap and gown. A very limited supply may be available on the day of the ceremony.

If you are a Boston or Canadian student, we highly recommend you pick up your cap and gown prior to the ceremony or have someone else pick it up on your behalf.

What if I lose my cap and gown?

Extra regalia items will be available at all ceremonies. We cannot guarantee cap and gown sizes as only a limited number of extra regalia will be available.

If you are a Boston student and lose an item of regalia, you can return to the Northeastern Bookstore during open pick-up dates and times to replace the lost item.

Students receiving academic honors

Undergraduate students receiving a 3.5 GPA or above will receive academic honors and will be recognized with a gold cord that can be worn during the ceremony. Honor cord pick-up will be at the Curry Student Center during cap and gown pick-up dates and times.

In the event a student is not honors eligible for the ceremony program or the honors cord based on their current projected honors, students are still eligible for Latin honors if their final GPA is above a 3.500. In this case, after all final semester grades are submitted the university will award Latin honors reflected on the student’s awarded degree.

At the ceremonies, you’re invited to carry a flag from a country that had an impact on your personal or professional life. For safety purposes, graduates may carry no more than three flags at the ceremonies.

Please note that the flags you select will only be available for pickup at your campus. Additional details about flag pick-up will be shared via your Northeastern email based on your campus.
